Lately I've been really heavy into organizing and backing up all my pictures and video. I recently bought a fireproof safe to keep miniDV tapes and picture CDs in. I also have copies of most picture CDs at work. Last week I even went and had all of my old advantix film rolls converted to CDs (22 rolls - $120). Then, over the course of an evening I organized them all into folders in chronological order on my PC (just like all my other pics are organized). The next step was to buy a scanner this week and scan the rest of my pictures. Then I'd make a couple backups of everything and store them in different locations.
You always hear of people "losing all their memories in a fire" ... I don't want this to happen. So everything is good, I only have 1,000+ pictures since November (Friends visiting, Christmas, Chicago visits, Denver, Cornell, etc) that I haven't backed up plus the newly digitized and organized pics.
The story continues yesterday at work when my ipod stops working while connected to my PC. I couldn't even run Updater to format it. It would crash itunes, crash my whole PC, etc. So I unplugged it and decided to format it and put music back on it when I got home.
Once I get home I run updater and format my ipod, then I start copying mp3s over to it through itunes. (side note: all of my media is on my slave 120GB F: drive... pictures, video, music, etc) While it's copying I leave for a while and come back to notice that it had only copied 1,200 out of the 1,800 that I selected. Hmmm, weird... So I formatted the ipod again to start fresh, opened itunes, tried copying the files over, and itunes froze. I rebooted and repeated this another time... same results. So I go to "My Computer" double click "F:" and I get this error: Incorrect function.
This is about the time that I freaked out. Everything is on that drive, everything I've done on a computer, in fact, it's everything from the past 5 years. It includes all of my pictures, videos, video edits, site designs, graphic designs, resume, cover letters, music, everything that i've ever accumulated since I've owned a PC was on this drive... Including, the pictures that I have not backed up yet.
So my computer has been acting a little funny over the past couple weeks, I haven't been able to open notepad, etc. Maybe I have a virus? I've never had a virus or virus protection software so I didn't really know what exactly to do. So I download Norton, run the scan and find out that I do, in fact, have a virus. It's called the backdoor.jeem virus. It was found in c:program filesoutlook expressoutl32c.exe and c:windowssystem32msrexe.exe. I search google for msrexe.exe and find that it's a 'Medium-Level' trojan that arrives as an attachment in your email and it is usually disguised as a picture file (.JPG or .BMP). When you click on the picture file, two '.EXE' files are loaded onto your hard drive, MSREXE.EXE and one of the following three: RUN.EXE, WINDOS.EXE or MUEEXE.EXE. I also find some steps to run in the registry in order to completely get rid of it.
I ran the steps to get rid of it, delete the file, reboot, and find that my F: drive still doesn't work. So I unplugged the slave and decided to backup email, and ther few files that I had on the master HD. Rather than burning 20 CDs, I decided to be resourceful and dump everything to my NEWLY FORMATTED IPOD! HURRAH! Then I formatted the master, reinstalled XP, everything ran fine... just like a new PC.
Finally, after a couple hours, it's time to plug my slave back in and try to get files off of it. I plug it in, boot up, windows recognizes my "new hardware" which is the maxtor 120GB HD and everything seems good... double click "my computer," it takes a long time to display all the drives, but all the drives showed up. double clicked f:
INCORRECT FUNCTION.
I am really really sad today. I think that most everything I've ever done on my computer is gone and never coming back. Why did I decide that computers were what I wanted to do with my life? LAME.

With your propensity for starting fires, that safe is a good idea.

couple ideas...
09:29|<ranc0r> you could throw it in a linux box and try to mount up the partition
09:29|<broox> i thought you couldn't do that with ntfs?
09:30|<ranc0r> its read only
09:33|<Comps97> i always mount failed drives. i think i've been successful 6 out the 8 times, or something like that, just using windows
09:34|<Comps97> but if its your slave that failed, you may be screwed
09:34|<Comps97> these were always masters that wouldnt boot, but setting them as slaves they were ok in most of the cases
09:35|<dracos> jesus.....that just sucks derek
09:36|<xy_goat> you can pay someone to remove the data

Agentisu5: can you even run chkdsk on the drive?
Agentisu5: chkdsk /r f:
Agentisu5: /r locates bad sectors and recovers readable information
Agentisu5: www.computerhope.com...#03
/>
Agentisu5: that command has saved me a few times
Agentisu5: mostly on my neuros, but still
Agentisu5: kept me from having to reload 11 gigs of music

So...when can we throw the party?
