Supposedly the Sidekick 3 comes out July 10 and I just got
mine - 4 days early, suckers. And what a great time to get a new phone - when I'm
home sick. So needless to say, I've been playing with it a lot in bed, hehehehe.
I really really like the SK3. The interface (both physical and soft) is much nicer. It's about 1/4 inch
shorter than the sidekick 2 and a bit lighter. So overall it's much easier to hold. The really nice thing about going from a
Sidekick 2 to a Sidekick 3 is that you already know how to use it. Most of the commands are exactly the same. There are just some added bells/whistles to learn - which is super easy given Danger's user-friendly OS. Plus as soon as I powered on the device with my old SIM card, it pulled down ALL my data (contacts, photos, email, notes, IM names, everything).
Here are the biggest improvements over the Sidekick 2:
The trackball rules. I really really think more phones should adopt this. The home navigation is much nicer in that it now has sub-categories. So you can scroll vertically through the nav and then scroll over to access sub-apps, like chat clients, organizers, games, etc. Plus it's nice for browsing the web and many other things on the phone.
Mini-SD!!! Finally. The phone comes with a 64mb card, but obviously it's upgradeable as high as you want to go. You can store all your photos and music on there, and manage it all on your PC via USB. You can also now dump photos from your computer to this drive and keep them in a photo album. And from there you can set your own photos as caller ID photos - this is MUCH nicer than having to take them with the internal cam.
It has Bluetooth for hands-free devices and sending vCards. I haven't used the bluetooth yet, so I don't know what else it can do - I hope more, like someday syncing. (intellisync works for now though).
The web browser is quite a bit quicker with EDGE. It's not like EDGE is lightning fast like wifi, but it's still fast and makes browsing much easier.
The camera is now 1.3 megapixel - which is nice, but still fairly ghetto. I've only taken 1 pic so far in fairly low light. I bet it will look much better with daytime photos.
Some small features that are nice are - changeable backgrounds, nicer sounds, airplane mode, more chat options, and it's an overall prettier device. The music player is pretty dope and easy to use/manage... even though I'll only use this feature to show people i
can.
The only lame things I have found so far: no terminal client yet and USB is only 1.1. But other than that, it rules...
Go get one, you will like it.

wow... Danger sexified the SK by giving it the whole glossy-fiberglass look that the PSP has... that's hot.

...airplane mode? I thought cells were supposed to be switched off during flights. Does it just kill the reception or something?

a lot of flights let you use cells if you can turn off the signal - so a lot of modern phones are now making them with "airplane mode" or some kind of way to turn off the signal.
this way you could still use applications, games, etc.

Can I buy your old one?

You can still use your phone, with the signal and the airplane is fine. If the stewardess asks; just say it is on "airplane mode and the signal is disabled." They could care less.
